šŸ˜³ Thwart to Google Gods: Has your website traffic dried up? Ya, mine too. Hereā€™s some things you can do about it to get you started to get back to ā€˜normalā€™ā€¦

Have you notice that lately, and quite suddenly,Ā your website has been buried in the search results with Google?

Ya, mine too.

Do you rely on website traffic to sell your stuff?

Ya, me too.

I just found out that the Google Gods once again, changed its algorithms, and in a really big way.

Freakinā€™ hell.

My real estate assistant training and certification program through my company, REA University, had been going gangbusters and then all in a suddenĀ CRICKETS. Iā€™ve been racking my brain ever since. What gives? Itā€™s an incredibly scorching market ā€“ why wouldnā€™t someone so inclined, want to become a real estate assistant?

Cue Googleā€¦

Imagine my surprise (read: disgust, dismay, ARGHHHHHH!) when I found out what Google had done: They didĀ a major update/overhaul of the algorithmsĀ and buggered so many of usā€¦ again.

I searched Google for ā€œreal estate assistant trainingā€ and by page 5,Ā I was still no where to be found. WTF(iddlesticks)? We were always on the first page, and most often in the first or second position.

Oh. My. Gawd. No wonder Iā€™ve had so few new students.Ā No one can find me!

I repeat ā€“ ARGHHHHHHH!

So, hereā€™s what I learned.

Head over toĀ Google PageSpeed InsightsĀ and pop in your URL, then click ā€˜Analyzeā€™. Give it a few minutes and then check your score. I hope yours is better than mine was ā€“ a whopping 32 out of 100. (Yikes!Ā Googleā€™s looking for at least 90/100!)

After doing a few things, Iā€™m now at 72/100 (much more to do), but I wanted to take some time out to give you a heads up about whatā€™s going on and maybe save you from losing any more revenue.

Google is ā€˜rewardingā€™ sites based on:

  • Fast-loading sites
  • User experience

I havenā€™t gone down the research rabbit hole to figure out what they mean by ā€œpositive user experienceā€ yet, but at least Iā€™ve been making headway with my page loading speed. Hereā€™s what Iā€™ve done:

After reading Googleā€™s suggestions under ā€˜Opportunityā€™ on the PageSpeed Insights results page, Iā€™ve followed some of the recommendations so far. Iā€™ve installed and configured a few free plugins to my WordPress site and now Iā€™m examining what is loading on my pages that doesnā€™t need to. (Following the links in ā€œOpportunitiesā€.)

A word of caution: Running some of these plugins can ā€œbreakā€ your site.Ā I tried another of the plugins recommended (Autoptimize) and it broke my connection to Leadpages, disabling it. I had to reactivate and install the pages again. I found that Autoptimize didnā€™t give me the results I was looking for, so Iā€™m trying WP Fastest Cache, and it seems to be a bit better.

Oh, andā€¦Ā deactivate and deleteĀ any unnecessary plugins ā€“ they can also slow your site down.

I hope this helps you to know why your traffic may have dried up and what you can to about it.

P.S. Do you like my little devil drawing? Itā€™s one of my first attempts with my Apple pen and iPad, using Procreate. Fun!Ā šŸ˜ˆ
